Glen Iris, Victoria

Landscape Design Project

An Inner Eastern Melbourne property comprising a beautifully renovated period style home and a large over grown back yard. The owners needed an appropriate entertaining space for their extended family & friends. Being creatives the owners enjoy interesting materials and design so were open to the use of large scale recycled timbers, copper rainwater products and sculptural concepts to incorporate the garden as part of the new design.

A large alfresco space which still provided plenty of light and did not dominate the rear yard was the priority. Space was designated for housing future chickens, a worm farm, a seedling & propagating house, a small area of lawn and a water garden were proposed – all accessible directly from the home and entertaining areas.

Step 1 – Demolish the existing partially inground pool and badly rotten treated pine deck, stairs, balustrade and entire subfloor structure.

Step 2 – Construction of a much larger area for entertaining to include a wrap around deck along the western elevation with a sculptural arbor over. The use of beautiful large scale recycled bridge timbers, raw steel, copper guttering and down pipes being the dominant feature. 2 new flights of stairs were incorporated to access both the yard and work shop. Given the scale of the recycled timber a proportionately dimensioned decking board was selected and a bullnose detail applied to the thickened perimeter edge including each of the stairs. This gave a wonderful strength to the overall appearance of the finished product.

Copper was selected for the small length of gutter, single down pipe and visible flashing – this wonderfully warm material quickly patinaed to blend with the richness of the ironbark bridge timbers. Copper pendant lights and assorted décor items strung through the arbor cables provided the perfect finishes touches.
